Redbox Ramblings

At the centre of the enchanting Shire of Nillumbik, at the western end of the Yarra Valley, twenty minutes from the suburbs of Melbourne in the village of Kangaroo Ground, you will find the Redbox Cellar door.

Set in an old vineyard at the north end of Kangaroo Ground, on a property named Wildfell, by the first landholder, Walter Wippel in 1851, the Redbox Cellar Door welcomes visitors to a pleasant venue with ambience to compliment a fine range of wines.

The Shire of Nillumbik is steeped in history, and dotted with villages and towns, each with its own special magic.  Names like Cottle's Bridge, Panton Hill, St Andrews, Hurstbridge and Wattle Glen all hinting of a culture brought to the region by the Scottish settlers in the early 1800's.

Imagine the traffic through these places during the gold rush era, slow moving but busy, nonetheless, with horses and carts limited to no more than ten miles per day. What a magical area to drive through.

The Redbox Vineyard and Winery in Ness Lane Kangaroo Ground, just past the SES radio head quarters, has been brought to life over the past two years, and the Spencer family happily welcomes visitors every weekend.

Wineries with cellar doors open on weekends welcome visitors, offering a taste of excellent wines, refreshments, and an opportunity to sit about and admire the special life style of current day settlers; absorbing the moment and enjoying the view.

Groups of visitors are welcomed on week days, but, at Redbox, every day feels like a lazy Sunday, so when you come, be prepared to kick back and relax for a while. Taste superb wines, with a delightful cheese platter, a gourmet cake, tea or coffee, while you forget the rest of the week.

You have been invited, so come on out.
